Sa Stiddiosa Waterfall

“I felt my lungs swell under the effect of the landscape: air, mountains, trees, people. I thought, “That’s what it’s like to be happy.” – Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar

Cascata Sa Stiddiosa is a hidden natural treasure in Sardinia, Italy. Located in the Barbagia region, more precisely in the Supramonte Valley, this waterfall is known for its picturesque setting and unspoiled environment. The name “Sa Stiddiosa” derives from the Sardinian word “stiddiu”, which means “drop”, referring to the water that continually seeps from the rock walls, creating a multitude of small cascades and seeps.

The most distinctive feature of Sa Stiddiosa is its impressive rock wall, from which water continuously seeps. These drops of water form a shimmering curtain that falls into a natural pool below, creating a serene and magical atmosphere. The water is cool and clear, often inviting visitors to take a dip during the summer months. The walls are covered in moss and lush vegetation, adding to the wild charm of the place.

The area surrounding Sa Stiddiosa is rich in biodiversity. The flora includes various species of plants endemic to Sardinia, such as the strawberry tree, the myrtle, and different types of oak and juniper. The fauna is equally varied, with the presence of mammals such as foxes and wild boars, as well as several species of birds, including birds of prey.

To reach Sa Stiddiosa, follow the signs off provincial road number 8.

Sa Stiddiosa is located on the Flumendosa River, between the municipalities of Seulo and Gadoni. Getting there is usually a moderate hike, which helps preserve the isolation and natural beauty of the site. The paths are well signposted, but it is advisable to wear good walking shoes and bring plenty of water, as there are no sources of drinking water along the way.

Although Sa Stiddiosa is becoming increasingly well-known, it remains relatively uncrowded compared to other tourist attractions in Sardinia. This is partly due to its more difficult access, but it also helps to preserve its natural environment.
